RABBINICAL LEADERSHIP FOR PUBLIC LIFE TRAINING PROGRAM
Upon ordination, today’s rabbis face the challenges of engaging their communities in the critical and profoundly Jewish work of meaningful social justice. Rabbis often express their desire to understand the use of power and relationships in public life, and to employ effective strategies for building strong, healthy synagogues.
To address these challenges, Jewish Funds for Justice has created five leadership development and organizing training opportunities:
- A one-semester, twelve-session cross-seminary fellowship (Fellowship) held one evening a week, in the fall of 2006, for twelve rabbinical students from the Jewish Theological Seminary, Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion, Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, and Yeshiva University;
- A one-semester organizing and leadership development course at Yeshivat Chovevei Torah for second-year students, as part of their required professional development program, to be held in fall, 2006
- One semester internships and rotations with rabbis at synagogues involved in congregation-based community organizing (CBCO). (available only to students taking one of our courses)
- Summer internships with seasoned CBCO organizers and rabbis;
- Summer or year-long internship with One LA (a faith-based community organizing network) and local synagogues involved in CBCO (available only to Hebrew Union College – Los Angeles rabbinical students)
The goal of our Rabbinical Leadership for Public Life training programs is to provide rabbinical students with organizing and leadership development training, mentorship opportunities with rabbis and organizers engaged in CBCO, and opportunities to strengthen inter-denominational bonds with rabbinical students from different seminaries.
