What is Jewish Funds for Justice?
We are a public foundation established through the merger of The Shefa Fund and the Jewish Fund for Justice, and Spark: Partnership for Service. We mobilize the resources of American Jewry to combat the root causes of domestic economic and social injustice. Our diverse programs include leadership development, grantmaking to support community organizing, loans for community economic development, Jewish service learning and synagogue-based organizing. We have offices in New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Los Angeles and help create change in more than a dozen cities or regions. For more information, please contact us.
Why does a Jewish foundation make grants to non-Jewish organizations?
We believe that a commitment to combating both poverty and the injustices underlying it is an essential part of our core identity as Jews. We believe that Jewish obligations are both particularistic and universalistic. When we make grants to grassroots organizations of low income people or loans to credit unions seeking to support economic development in marginalized neighborhoods, we are acting upon our universal obligations to help those in need. When we work with Jews, whether through Hillels or Hebrew schools, at concerts or in congregations, we are acting upon our particular obligation to help create a vibrant Jewish community committed to justice (tzedek) and acts of loving kindness (chesed).
Can I apply for a grant?
Grants applications are by invitation only but you can submit an inquiry form if you think your organization is eligible. Click here for more information.
What makes Jewish Funds for Justice different from other philanthropies?
We bring a distinctive Jewish presence and perspective to faith-based philanthropy. Our organization is unique in that it supports and funds community-based institutions of all faiths and backgrounds. Through education, synagogue activism, and organizing, it provides a way for Jews to become more effective and strategic about social justice.
