Phuoc Loc Supermarket

Kim Loan Cao owns Phuoc Loc Supermarket, a Vietnamese grocery store.

Kim moved to the U.S. from Vietnam in 1989, and to Louisiana in 1995. Kim lost everything in Katrina, which flooded her store. By 2006, Kim was able to rebuild her business, but she quickly felt unsafe in the neighborhood as few residents had returned. In October 2006, Kim purchased Phuoc Loc Supermarket and relocated to New Orleans East.

Since opening Phuoc Loc, Kim has seen her business flourish. Popular items sold at the store are roasted duck and pork, and whole roasted pigs, popular at traditional Vietnamese weddings. All produce sold is grown by local farmers, and fresh baked Vietnamese breads and pastries are available. Kim also stocks products geared toward the area's growing Latino population, including mangos, plantains, and cheeses.

JFSJ will match, dollar for dollar, the $7,500 8th Degree raises.

Kim will use her $15,000 loan to increase her inventory of Asian and Latino foods.
